  • There’s no doubt that losing top-line right wing Jake DeBrusk to leg and hand injuries for the next four weeks at the very least certainly hurts the Bruins. But when your proverbial ‘next man up’ is David Pastrnak, well, that clearly makes things a whole lot easier.

In his second game back with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, Pastrnak scored what held as the game-winning goal and the insurance marker on the way to the Black and Gold’s 4-2 final Saturday night in San Jose.

With the victory, the Bruins extended their point streak to 13 games, with a 10-0-3 record since their Dec. 11 meeting with the Golden Knights.

  • And though it was Pastrnak who led the team in goals by the night’s end, it was an absolute doozy of a Marchand score that kicked things off for the Bruins, as Marchand went dancing end-to-end for a game-opening tally scored at the 1:03 mark of the first period.

It was the tone-setting goal that the Bruins needed to avoid a potentially ‘sleepy’ start against an obviously inferior San Jose squad, and the Bruins built on Marchand’s tally with a Craig Smith marker sniped through the Sharks’ James Reimer just 4:29 after Marchand’s goal.

  • At the other end of the rink, Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark was strong when he needed to be, and finished with 28 saves on 30 shots faced en route to his 22nd victory of the season.

The 6-foot-5 Ullmark, who will be one of at least two Bruins going to Sunrise for the 2023 All-Star Game, has now surrendered two goals or fewer in 18 of his 25 starts on the season.

The victory bumped Ullmark’s record on up to 22-1-1 on the year. But in what can be described as pure absurdity, the 28-of-30 performance actually dipped Ullmark’s season save percentage down to .938, and jumped his season goals against average up from 1.86 to 1.87. Pretty ridiculous, to be honest.

  • It was also a night of milestones for a few Bruins.

With his assist on Marchand’s game-opening goal, Boston captain Patrice Bergeron moved into sole possession of third place on the B’s all-time points list. Bergeron entered the night tied with Phil Esposito with 1,012 career points, but is now at 1,014 after a two-apple outing.

It’s hard to envision Bergeron moving any higher than that, as the next two players on the list are Johnny Bucyk (1,339 points) and Ray Bourque (1,506 points).

A two-assist night for Charlie McAvoy, meanwhile, bumped Boston’s franchise defenseman up over 200 points for his NHL career. He is the 10th member of the 2016 class to hit the 200-point mark.

Taylor Hall also suited up for what was the 800th game of his NHL career. Hall, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2010 NHL Draft, became the sixth player from the 2010 class to appear in 800 games. Oddly enough, 2010 classmate Justin Faulk was also playing in his 800th NHL game tonight for the Blues.

  • An under-the-weather A.J. Greer led to what was a first for Jim Montgomery and the Bruins this year, as the Bruins iced a lineup that featured 11 forwards and seven defensemen.

That lineup complexion led to the first game action for Bruins defenseman Jakub Zboril since Nov. 23 in Florida. Boston’s obvious No. 7 defenseman on the night, Zboril finished this contest with one block in 6:47 of time on ice.

With Greer out and Zboril in, fourth-line banger Chris Wagner, who was recalled by the team on Wednesday day but didn’t arrive in LA until late Wednesday night, sat as the lone healthy scratch for the Bruins in this contest.

The Bruins will end their California swing Sunday night in Anaheim.
