What, you thought the Bruins were going to escape their regular season finale without an injury scare?!

And obviously, it had to be captain Patrice Bergeron who ominously exited the Bruins’ 5-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens early on Thursday night. The Bruins tweeted that Bergeron had an upper body injury, and did add that his exit was “precautionary,” which probably eased a lot of concerns for onlookers. But those fears weren’t going to totally dissipate until head coach Jim Montgomery gave an update after the game.

  • Fortunately, Montgomery confirmed to reporters that Bergeron is OK, and even would have gone back into the game, if Montgomery signed his permission slip. Wisely, the head coach told the captain to just take the rest of the night off and look toward the start of the playoffs.

“Oh, yeah, 37’s fine,” Montgomery said of Bergeron. “He wanted to go back out. I said no.”

Montgomery added that he didn’t even know when Bergeron got hurt.

  • It was a relatively great year health-wise for Bergeron. He played 77 games, his highest total since 2017, and finished with 27 goals and 58 points and a plus-34 rating.

Bergeron also played his usual stellar defensive play at the center position. Among all forwards with at least 1300 minutes of ice time this season, Bergeron was on the ice for the fewest goals against per 60 minutes (1.72), according to Natural Stat Trick. He has a legitimate chance to win his sixth Frank J. Selke Trophy, which would extend his league record for that award.

Sounds like the Bruins dodged a major bullet with his brief injury scare on Thursday night. Bergeron will be right back in the lineup Monday for Game 1 against the Florida Panthers, centering his usual line with Brad Marchand and Jake DeBrusk flanking him.
