  • The Bruins continued to inch their way towards an Opening Night roster Thursday, with the confirmation of nine additional cuts from the team’s training camp roster.

The cuts featured a mix of rookies and veterans, and came on the heels of a comeback win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, and with more than a few players pushing for an extended stay with the club.

  • The biggest shock from Thursday’s cuts came with the word that forward Marc McLaughlin, who was looking like a borderline lock for a job on this team, was among those sent down to Providence.

In action for four games this preseason, McLaughlin finished tied for the team lead in goals (two), points (four), and shots (nine) this preseason. And among a group of 273 NHL forwards with at least 30 five-on-five minutes this preseason, the Billerica, Mass. native McLaughlin ranked 17th in points per 60 (4.16), and was 56th in individual expected goals per 60 (0.96).

It’s worth noting that McLaughlin did not require waivers to be sent down to Providence, which almost certainly played a factor in the Bruins’ decision to send him down to the minors.

Here’s who else got the cut on Thursday…

  • Johnny Beecher

  • Another player who did not require waivers, the Bruins returned 2019 first-round Johnny Beecher down to the Providence Bruins, where he’ll log top-six minutes of the gate in 2022-23.

The 21-year-old Beecher appeared in four games this preseason, and finished with two goals and four shots on goal. The Bruins also incorporated the 6-foot-3 center into their penalty-killing game, and with Beecher making some noteworthy defensive plays along the way.

Beecher, who had a three-year career at the University of Michigan before turning pro at the end of the 2021-22 season, put up three goals and five points in nine games with the P-Bruins last year.

  • Fabian Lysell

  • 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell will also report to Providence for the start of his 2022-23 season.

The Bruins wanted to get another look at Lysell against NHL competition after last Saturday’s showing against Philly was cut short due to injury, and got it on Wednesday, with Lysell out there for two goals against and credited with one giveaway, a takeaway, and a blocked shot in 12:10 of time on ice.

  • Jack Ahcan

  • The Bruins have also reassigned Jack Ahcan to Providence. The 5-foot-8 Ahcan appears poised to take that next step in his development, and should emerge as Providence’s top offensive defenseman in 2022-23.

Another player who does not require waivers just yet, Ahcan departs Boston for Providence after a preseason run that included one assist, two shots, two hits, and a blocked shot in three appearances.

  • Kyle Keyser

The Bruins then rounded out the waiver-free assignments to the minors with the demotion of fourth-string netminder Kyle Keyser down to Providence. The 23-year-old Keyser made two relief appearances this preseason, and stopped 17-of-18 shots (a .944 save percentage) over that 44-minute sample.

  • Joona Koppanen

  • As for the players that the Bruins will put on the waiver wire in an attempt to sneak ’em down to Providence, center Joona Koppanen headlines the list of skaters.

The 6-foot-5, 216-pound center appeared in four games this preseason, and finished with one assist. It was a beauty of an assist, as Koppanen shut down a chance in his own end and carried the puck for a shorthanded feed to Oskar Steen for the game-tying goal in a home win over the Rangers. In addition to the helper, the 24-year-old Koppanen recorded four shots, two takeaways, and five hits for the Big B’s.

A fifth-round pick of the team back in 2016, Koppanen is coming off an AHL career-high 11 goals and 30 points last season. He’s been a P-Bruins fixture since the 2018-19 season.

  • Vinni Lettieri

Another forward who will hit the waiver wire for the Bruins: Vinni Lettieri.

The 27-year-old Lettieri, who can play both center and wing, did not record a point during his three-game preseason run with the B’s, but his 12 hits did rank second among all Boston skaters.

Lettieri, who has played in 82 NHL games between the Rangers and Ducks, is coming off a 2021-22 season that featured five goals and 10 points in 31 games for the Ducks.

  • Dan Renouf

The last ‘tweener’ standing on the backend after Tuesday’s cuts, Renouf’s time in main camp came to an end Thursday with the Bruins placing the veteran on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Providence.

Renouf, who is signed to a two-year, two-way contract worth $762,500 at the NHL level, departs B’s camp after a preseason that included one shot, seven hits, and two blocked shots in three games.

  • Keith Kinkaid

  • And in net, the Bruins will try to sneak third-string netminder Keith Kinkaid through waivers and down to Providence, where he’d split duties with Kyle Keyser as Providence’s ‘4K’ tandem.

In the cage for two games this fall, the 33-year-old Kinkaid stopped 33-of-35 shots faced (a .943 save percentage) in over 73 minutes of action against the Flyers and Devils.

Kinkaid has appeared in 167 NHL games since 2013, and has posted a 69-58-21 record and .905 save percentage over that stretch, with appearances for the Devils, Canadiens, and Rangers.
