The Boston Bruins fell to 29-9-9 on the season after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night at TD Garden.

Jordan Martinook scored the eventual game-winner for the Hurricanes with just 2:27 left in the third period, taking advantage of a Bruins defensive breakdown in the neutral zone and finishing on a breakaway. Brad Marchand scored both goals for the Bruins in the losing effort, in which they came back from down 2-0 to tie the game early in the third.

Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 30 of 33 Hurricanes shots (.909) in the loss. He’s 1-1 since returning to the lineup from a lower body injury.

The teams played nearly a full period without a goal, but the Hurricanes lit the lamp within the final two minutes of the first. It came off a wrist shot by Martin Necas from the high slot, as he whipped it through traffic and past Ullmark to give Carolina a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

  • The Hurricanes continued to pour on the pressure in the second period, and it reflected in the scoreboard by the end of it. Teuvo Teravainen made it 2-0 as he was tied up with the Bruins’ Charlie Coyle, just getting enough on the loose puck in the slot to chip it in through Ullmark.

  • Early in the third period, desperate to gain some momentum their way, Bruins captain Brad Marchand got them on the board. Marchand was left alone at the doorstep and took advantage of a nice tap-pass in his direction, tipping it up and in to make it 2-1 Hurricanes.

  • Later in the third period, Marchand struck again to get the game back to square one. Once again gaining inside position at the net-front, this time on a 3-on-2 rush, Marchand finished the centering feed with a tip through the five-hole of ‘Canes goaltender Spencer Martin.

  • But it would be the Hurricanes who got the last laugh in this one. Slipping through the Bruins defense in the neutral zone, Jordan Martinook took a feed from Sebastian Aho and got himself a breakaway, finishing through Ullmark’s five-hole to grab the eventual game-winner with just 2:27 left in regulation.
