  • The 2022 preseason will roll on for the Bruins on Tuesday night, and with a shift to TD Garden, as the Bruins will ‘up’ the veteran presences in action for the first of three tune-up contests on Boston ice.

Set to square off against the Rangers, all eyes on this one will be on the ongoing battle for minutes on Boston’s bottom six, with a roster almost completely built around that competition.

  • Up front, the Bruins’ third line will become their first line, with Charlie Coyle slated to center a line featuring Trent Frederic on the left and Craig Smith to the right.

Deployed for over 328 minutes of five-on-five action last year, the Frederic-Coyle-Smith trio held an on-ice shot advantage of 171-143, and outscored opponents 17-8.

Below the lone NHL forward line the Bruins will ice on Tuesday night, the Bruins will give Jack Studnicka a look between wingers A.J. Greer and Marc McLaughlin.

The 23-year-old Studnicka, who must make the Bruins’ roster out of training camp or hit the waiver wire, appeared in Saturday’s preseason opener and finished with three shots in 14:35 of time on ice. Studnicka had his decent of solid play in the opener, but will ultimately have to do more to show that he’s truly ready to grab hold of an NHL roster spot given the in-house competition for minutes.

Greer, meanwhile, will continue to look to show the Bruins that he’s willing to do the dirty work, like he did Saturday with his fight with the Flyers’ Hayden Hodgson after Hodgson’s hard hit on defenseman Jakub Zboril. The 6-foot-3 Greer, who put up 22 goals and 52 points in 53 games with AHL Utica last season, has impressed the Bruins with both his speed and shot.

But the goal for all three players on that line? Make life difficult for Montgomery and Sweeney.

“They’re vying for positions on the team,” Montgomery said. “They’re going to be getting more minutes tonight than they would usually get as a fourth-line Bruin, so they gotta impress and make an impact on the game.”

On the ‘third’ line, the Bruins will have Georgii Merkulov centering Sam Asselin and Oskar Steen, while the fourth line will feature Luke Toporowski with Joona Koppanen and Justin Brazeau.

  • On the backend, the Bruins will continue to give Anton Stralman, a 36-year-old in camp on a tryout, a great chance to stick by keeping him with defenseman Hampus Lindholm.

Stralman, a veteran of 930 NHL games since 2007, put up eight goals and 23 points in 74 games with the Coyotes last year.

Below the Lindholm-Stralman pairing, the Bruins will go with a second pairing of Mike Reilly and Brandon Carlo, and round things out with Michael Callahan paired with Connor Carrick.

In net, the Bruins will have three goalies at the rink for this contest, headlined by Jeremy Swayman.

The Alaskan-born netminder put up 23 wins and a .914 save percentage in 41 games last season.

It’s unclear just how the minutes will break down in this one (Swayman is not expected to play the full 60), but Swayman will be backed up by Brandon Bussi and Kyle Keyser.
