Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins

  • There was no dwelling on the historic home-ice streak becoming history for the Bruins, as Jim Montgomery’s team rebounded from Monday’s loss with a dominant 4-0 win over the Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Of course, that’s nothing new to the Bruins.

Now at the 25-game mark of the 2022-23 season, the Bruins remain a team without a losing streak to their name, as they’ve rebounded from all four of their losses to date with a victory in their next time out.

This latest one was absolutely clinical, too, as the Bruins managed a scoreless opening frame before busting through a battered Avalanche squad with a pair of goals in both the second and third period of action, turning this one into an outright non-competitive showdown by the night’s end.

Here’s the 98.5 The Sports Hub (dot com) 3 Stars of the game from a win in Denver

  • No. 3 Star: Linus Ullmark

  • Not that you should expect anything different at this point, but it was yet another steady and efficient night in goal for Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark.

Hit with 23 shots by the Avalanche, Ullmark finished with a perfect 23-for-23 line in the Boston crease for his second shutout of the season, and improved to 15-1-0 on the season.

It was a classic case of Ullmark simply doing his job, as he was hit with just two high-danger shots over the course of the game (according to NaturalStatTrick), and was hit with just one shot on goal against in over six minutes of play with Colorado on the man advantage. Clean and dependable is all the B’s needed from Ullmark in this contest, and they certainly got it from start to finish.

With the 23-save shutout, Ullmark dipped his league-leading goals against average from 1.93 to 1.82 and bumped his league-leading save percentage up from .936 to .939.

To recap, Ullmark is sitting atop the NHL with a 15-1-0 record, .939 save percentage, and 1.82 goals against average through 18 appearances. And in case you’re wondering, Tim Thomas was at 13-2-2 with a .956 save percentage and 1.46 goals against average after 18 appearances during his sensational 2010-11 season.

  • No. 2 Star: Charlie Coyle

  • Loved, loved, loved the game from Charlie Coyle in this one.

The center of Boston’s surging third line with Trent Frederic and Taylor Hall on the wings, Coyle used his size, strength, and know-how to directly factor in two of Boston’s goals in this contest.

On the first Hall goal, Coyle jumped on the Avalanche’s Ben Meyers and forced Meyers into a turnover that put the puck on Frederic’s stick and created a two-on-one opportunity for Coyle and Hall on the way to a goal. And then, with the Bruins protecting a two-goal lead in the third, Coyle used his frame and puck-protection skills to shake off Meyers and draw Andreas Englund towards him, which opened up a cleaner passing lane to get the puck to Hall and then Frederic for Frederic’s putaway tally.

The Hall-Coyle-Frederic line also dominated the puck once again, as the trio finished Wednesday’s game with an on-ice corsi-for percentage of 83.33 percent (10-2), 4-1 shot advantage, 5-1 scoring chance advantage, and 2-0 scoring edge in eight minutes of five-on-five time on ice together.

    Cookin’.

  • No. 1 Star: Taylor Hall

  • Speaking of cooking, Taylor Hall is officially on a heater for the Black and Gold.

On the board with a point for the fourth straight game, Hall finished Wednesday’s victory with two goals and an assist for his second three-point effort of the campaign and his first since Oct. 22 against the Wild.

On top of the point production, Hall finished this contest with a plus-4 rating, which made him the third different Bruins skater to finish a game with at least two goals, three points, and a plus-4 rating this season (Jake DeBrusk and A.J. Greer are the other two to accomplish that in a game this season). For context on the rarity of that, that’s something that had happened for a B’s skater just 25 times since the start of the 2000-01 season prior to this year’s three-pack, and was really only something you’d see from a Patrice Bergeron or Brad Marchand.

Hall was also a monster in the possession game, as he led all Bruins in corsi-for percentage (80.95 percent) with the Bruins out-attempting Colorado 17-4 during Hall’s 11:16 of five-on-five play. The Bruins also outshot the Avs 9-3 during that segment, and Hall was on the ice for all four Boston goals in the win.

    A dominant performance.
