Thursday night in Montreal was not a work of art for the Bruins.

But after the Bruins found themselves unable to capitalize on their chances in a Monday loss to the Blues back in Boston, the Bruins got the results when they needed them most, with goals from Danton Heinen and an overtime strike from Jake DeBrusk in a 2-1 victory over the Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

  • With the win, the Bruins wrapped up their season series with the Canadiens with a 3-0-1 record, along with a plus-8 goal differential against their rival of 100 years.

  • In what was a nine-shot opening frame from the Bruins, Heinen struck first, and on what was a second-chance look and Heinen falling to the seat of his pants with a net-front finish, scored at the 4:49 mark of the period.

The goal was Heinen’s 12th of the campaign, and good for his fourth in the season series against the Canadiens after scoring a hat trick against Montreal in a January showdown between the clubs at TD Garden.

And though that may not seem like a ton, it actually made Heinen just the fifth Bruins player since 2005-06 to score at least four goals against the Canadiens in a season series, joining a group that features Patrice Bergeron (2005-06), Milan Lucic (2010-11), David Pastrnak (2019-20), and Brad Marchand (2021-22).

Knotted up at 1-1 behind a Nick Suzuki market scored with 5:23 remaining in the first period, the Bruins and Canadiens dragged each other through the mud, and stifled one another while the goalies made the stops they needed to make.

In the Boston end, Linus Ullmark faced just 19 shots (his second-lowest shot against total this season), and finished with 18 saves in the win. The win puts the 30-year-old Ullmark on his first win streak since a two-game win streak sandwiched around the bye week and All-Star break, with a Jan. 27 win over the Flyers and a Feb. 8 shutout over the Canucks.

Montreal’s Sam Montembeault, meanwhile, stopped 22 of 24 shots faced in the hard-luck loss after making some big-time stops with the Canadiens drowning in their own end on a late-game power-play push from the Bruins.

On a lineup front, both defenseman Matt Grzelcyk and winger James van Riemsdyk missed this game with an illness that’s run through the Boston room of late, while Kevin Shattenkirk sat as a healthy scratch.

The changes on the backend opened the door for trade deadline addition Andrew Peeke to make his B’s debut. Slotted to the right of Parker Wotherspoon’s on the B’s third pairing, Peeke finished this game with two blocks and one hit in 17:01.

Johnny Beecher, meanwhile, made his triumphant return to the Big B’s lineup after almost two months down in the minors, and looked like a dude who has absolutely zero interest in returning to the minors. In just 11:39 of time on ice, the 6-foot-3 Beecher tallied two hits, two blocked shots, and won eight of his 11 faceoffs for Boston.

The Bruins return to action Saturday night when they play host to the Flyers at TD Garden.
