Jake DeBrusk reveals injury that limited regular-season productivity
Playing through an injury has become the norm for any and everybody during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
But for Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk and his 2024 playoff run, that injury came long before the postseason and wasn’t 100 percent until the postseason, the 27-year-old revealed in the wake of Boston’s season-ending loss to the Panthers at TD Garden.
“It was a rough regular season [and] I was dealing with some injuries; I broke my [left] hand right before the bye week,” DeBrusk said following Boston’s Game 6 loss. “Didn’t really heal until about a week out from the playoffs.
“The medical staff did a great job making sure I was ready to play and all that stuff. But there were some things that were going on this year, which makes it frustrating not being able to do that and just feeling limited, to be honest.”
The injury reveal explains why DeBrusk missed the club’s Jan. 27 head-to-head with the Flyers leading into Boston’s bye week, as well as his sluggish start upon Boston’s return from the bye and All-Star break, with just one goal and one assist in 12 games in February, and with a 0-0-0 line in 11 of those 12 games.
Unable to effectively shoot the puck, DeBrusk focused on other areas of his game (his penalty-killing game had tremendous growth this past season), and just turned his attention getting right for the Black and Gold’s postseason run.
“I knew my playoffs were going to be better,” DeBrusk admitted. “I could shoot the puck, use my bottom hand.”
“I knew I was gonna have to good playoffs. I had confidence in that. At the same time, I think I said it after game one of the whole thing, I didn’t care what I did. I just wanted to win.”
And to DeBrusk’s credit, his certainly did his part, with a team-leading five goals and 11 points in 13 playoff games for the B’s this spring.
DeBrusk’s continued playoff success makes it three straight springs of a return to “Playoff Jake,” with DeBrusk totaling 11 goals and 21 points in 27 games since the start of the 2022 playoffs.
DeBrusk is also staring down a potential jump into unrestricted free agency, and while it’s believed that his preference is to stay with the Bruins, DeBrusk opted not to touch any questions in regards to his Boston future following Friday’s loss.
