Bruins collapse in third period, lose to Hurricanes 4-1
The Boston Bruins allowed two third-period goals to drop a 4-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night at TD Garden. Boston still holds a three-point lead over the Florida Panthers for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.
The Hurricanes briefly thought they had the game’s first goal early in the first period, after goaltender Jeremy Swayman appeared to push the puck in under his skate. But the officials reviewed the play and determined that the puck never completely crossed the goal line, keeping it a scoreless game.
Ultimately, the game remained 0-0 at the end of the first period, with shots on goal at just 4-4 between the two teams in a tight checking game. The Bruins held an 18-15 edge in hits, as the physicality was noticeably ramped up.
It took something extraordinary for the scoreless tie to break. Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov executed a “Michigan goal,” lifting the puck onto the blade of his stick and shoving it over the goal line to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Play continued after Svechnikov scored, but eventually the arena horn sounded, signaling a goal review. Svechnikov was awarded the goal after the replay showed that the puck clearly crossed the goal line in flight.
Just 2:10 later, the Hurricanes struck again. Teuvo Teravainen made it 2-0 after a Swayman save bounced to his stick and trickled through. But 3:51 after that, defenseman Charlie McAvoy cut the deficit in half after a blocked Jakub Lauko shot produced a fortuitous bounce. McAvoy blasted a one-timer past Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov to make it 2-1.

The B’s started off the third period with a 7-1 edge in shots on goal, but the Hurricanes got two back and the second one went in. A Pavel Zacha turnover kept the ‘Canes alive in the Bruins’ end, then Zacha tried to make a heads-up play to clear the puck from the crease, but it backfired and crossed the goal line to give the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead. Jake Guentzel was credited with the third goal.

The Bruins grabbed a power play later in the third period, but instead of climbing back into the game, the Hurricanes took it the other way for a shorthanded tally. Seth Jarvis finished a wraparound off Swayman and in to make it 4-1, and essentially put the game out of reach.
