The Boston Bruins are making a hockey trade just ahead of the deadline.
As first reported by Andrew Peeke to BOS
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) March 8, 2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elliotte Friedman, the Bruins are acquiring defenseman Andrew Peeke from the Columbus Blue Jackets. TSN’s Bob McKenzie later added that the trade is actually a swap of blue liners, with 2015 first-round pick Jakub Zboril headed to Columbus. The team later announced that the trade also includes a 2027 third-round pick.

Some pertinent stats on Peeke, via Among group of 325 players to play at least 3,000 minutes over last three seasons, Peeke ranks sixth in blocks per 60 (6.03) and 35th in hits per 60 (6.43). Has another two years at $2.75M AAV after this.

So, he would qualify as a replacement for Derek Forbort as a shot-blocking specialist, except as a right-shot defenseman.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Peeke will add some much-needed size and physicality to the Bruins’ back end. He’s also under contract through the 2025-26 season at $2.75 million and turns 26 years old on March 17. So, with this addition, the Bruins are hoping to solidify the entire right side of their defense.
The move marks the second trade of the day for the Bruins. They also acquired winger Pat Maroon from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Luke Toporowski and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft.
According to Chris Johnston, the Bruins are taking on Peeke’s entire salary, so they will need to move money out before the deadline.

6 quick Bruins thoughts on trade deadline day
I’m gonna level with you guys here: I have no idea what the Boston Bruins are going to do today.
We know they have needs. Multiple needs, actually. But they also have no cap space, they have no high-end prospects they want to trade (or can afford to trade, really), and they’ve emptied the draft pick cupboard to the point where it’s legitimately difficult to rationalize sending more out the door for part-time help. At a certain point, you gotta call it quits with that approach, especially when you’re looking at a 2024 NHL Draft that currently has you set to sit out the first three rounds.
But we also know that Bruins general manager Don Sweeney does not like to sit on the sidelines. In fact, Sweeney has made at least one trade in every deadline on the job in Boston.
Sweeney’s trade have ranged from home run swings (Hampus Lindholm in ’22 comes to mind there, as well as his entire 2023 deadline in the name of one final run with Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci) to small-time plays. On the small-time trade front, the 2017 trade that brought Drew Stafford to town for some middle-six scoring help sticks out.
