Bruins hold on to beat Golden Knights in 5-4 slobberknocker
Morgan Geekie scored his first career hat trick and Mason Lohrei scored a power play goal late in the third period, powering the Boston Bruins to a 5-4 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night at TD Garden. The victory marks the Bruins’ first win in four games and first in seven to avoid overtime.

As we rewind to the first period, the Bruins played arguably their best opening 20 minutes of the season. However, they didn’t score until a three-goal burst in a span of 2:20 late in the period. Morgan Geekie broke the dam with a breakaway goal, which Trent Frederic created with a perfect touch-pass up the middle of the ice.

Just 30 seconds later, Jakub Lauko corralled the puck behind the net and made a nifty backhand feed in front, where Jesper Boqvist was there to finish the one-timer.

To make it 3-0, David Pastrnak made a great cross-ice pass to Geekie on a rush, and Geekie fired a wrist shot home for his second goal of the game.

The game got wild – and became a competitive game again – in the second period. First, Vegas got on the board after Paul Cotter batted the puck out of midair and past Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

Vegas then made it 3-2 with a goal by Alex Pietrangelo, who took advantage of a late-to-arrive Bruins defense and scored on the third effort.

But then the Bruins got an insurance goal of the stick of Geekie, who earned his first career hat trick with a rebound in tight.

The breathing room would be short-lived, as the Knights’ Michael Amadio scored just 1:14 after Geekie to make it 4-3, which would be the score headed into the second intermission.

And it was early in the third period that the Knights got their last equalizer. Capitalizing off a takeaway on a Bruins power play, Chandler Stephenson streaked to the net and roofed it over Swayman for a shorthanded goal and a 4-4 game.
3-0 deficit? What 3-0 deficit?

Lohrei’s goal would come more than 10 minutes later, and the Bruins secured two points for the first time since last Wednesday in Edmonton.
Up Next: The Bruins will head back on the road for a Saturday night tilt against the New York Islanders.
