Bruins blow lead late, lose in overtime to Canucks
Instead of closing out what would’ve been a nice stolen road win over the NHL’s top team, the Boston Bruins couldn’t hang on.
The B’s blew a 2-0 lead in the third period before losing in overtime on Saturday night, as the Vancouver Canucks stormed back late and snatched a 3-2 victory on the strength of two goals by Brock Boeser, including the game-winner. The Bruins gifted the Canucks a power play in overtime after getting caught with too many men on the ice.
The teams battled to a scoreless first period, as the Bruins edged the Canucks in shots on goal 10-9. The B’s could not capitalize on three power play opportunities in the opening 20 minutes.
It was during the second period, at 5-on-5, that the Bruins finally found the back of the net. Fourth-liners Jesper Boqvist and Justin Brazeau combined for a nifty goal, with Brazeau gaining control into the offensive zone then using his reach to make the centering pass to Boqvist, who finished with a quick deke to beat Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko.

Later in the period, Danton Heinen would make the Canucks pay for letting him park right at the crease. Heinen shoveled the puck home before making contact with Demko, avoiding goalie interference and giving the Bruins the 2-0 lead.

The Canucks’ third-period comeback was swift, with goals by Brock Boeser and Filip Hronek in a span of exactly six minutes late in regulation. Boeser’s second of the night beat Swayman on a 4-on-3 power play, cashing in on the Bruins’ too many men penalty.
With the OT loss, the Bruins dropped to 34-12-13 on the season. They’re now 3-3-4 since returning from the All-Star break.
Up Next: The Bruins have one more game on their northwest road trip against the Seattle Kraken on Monday, then they’ll return home for a date with the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
