Phil Perry: I still don’t think a decision has been made at QB
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston joined Zolak & Bertrand on Monday and his outlook on the Patriots quarterback situation is that a decision still hasn’t been made on who’s starting Sunday.
Feels like Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe will battle in practice…
Marc Bertrand: What do you take away from Bill O’Brien today, Phil?
Phil Perry: It was interesting, wasn’t it? Well, listen, it sounded like based on some of the comments, not only has the decision not been made yet, but he went on to emphasize, I don’t know if you guys heard this part of the press conference. Hey, what I love about coaching here is that you earn your work in practice. And so now it feels like they’re going to just go into it this week. Have those two guys compete. And when I say two guys, I mean Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.
We spoke about this on Friday. What’s interesting about that to me is I spoke to coaches with the team after the Cowboys game. Right. So they get murdered by the Saints. Same deal in Dallas. And coaches then were saying, you know, I ask what do you do about the quarterback position? At that point, over a month ago…. you know what? Maybe just have them compete in practice, Mac and Bailey, and just see who wins because at that point, at least the players will have seen the results of the competition. Okay, player X played better this week. He gets the job than everybody is sort of okay with it. It’s not just Bill making a unilateral decision. This is who we’ve got this week and you got to believe in this guy because I believe in him.
Marc Bertrand: I brought that up this morning after I heard Billy today and I brought up Billy day after Dallas, said he fully expects Mack to still be the starter. And that was the big difference in comparison of the two, where it’s my job to get all three ready.
Phil Perry: Today versus a few weeks ago, when he was asked and everybody’s asking about Mac Jones and his job security, he said, yeah I do expect Mac Jones to be the starter. And so it was a very different answer today. I still don’t think a decision has been made, though, which is stunning to me.
