Joe Murray

On tonight's edition of Murray's musings ( a nightly segment when we do whenever we have a full 4-hour show) Joe aired his grievances with a song everyone knows the Macarena. The Macarena song was released in 1993 by the band Los Del Rio  and while everyone knows the macarena do you know the meaning behind the song? Joe and I didn't and this is where Joe Murray's issue with the song comes into play.

Joe's issue with the Macarena comes from the actual meaning behind the song and it's not so positive messaging. What many including myself consider a positive upbeat song has some not so positive lyrics the deeper you dive into it. Joe dives into the true meaning behind the song breaking down the lyrics and the not so positive messaging in the song. Is a pretty universally loved song actually a pretty dark story of a women cheating on her boyfriend? Joe seems to think so and breaking down the lyrics it's hard to disagree, listen below to the segment and decide for yourself!

For context here's an English translation of the song provided by macarena.com/macarena-song-lyrics

"Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give you joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey Macarena
Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey Macarena

(Verse 1)
Macarena has a boyfriend
named Vitorino’s last name
That the boy swears in the flag swear
He gave it to two friends
Macarena has a boyfriend’s name
That is called Vitorino surname
And in the jury the boy
gave it to him with two friends

(Chorus)
Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey Macarena
Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey macarena

Macarena Macarena Macarena
What do you like the summers of Marbella
Macarena Macarena Macarena
What do you like the guerrilla movement

(Chorus)

Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey Macarena
Give your body joy Macarena
That your body is to give joy and good thing
Give your body joy, Macarena
Hey Macarena

(Verse 3)

Macarena sounds with the English Court
And you buy the most modern models
He would like to live in New York
And flirting a new boyfriend
Macarena sounds with the English Court
And he buys the most modern models.
He would like to live in New York
and tie a new boyfriend."

After listening to the song with Joe and listening to him break down the lyrics it's tough to feel the same way about the upbeat tune and now I don't know if I'll ever hear the song the same way.
