Beetle: What was Tom Brady’s role in Josh McDaniels being fired?
After the latest news of Josh McDaniels getting fired by the Raiders, Beetle questioned what role Tom Brady played in this decision.
Could Brady have saved McDaniels’ job?
Marc Bertrand: What role did Tom Brady play in this? Has anyone talked about that today?
Scott Zolak: No. First, I’ve heard of it.
Marc Bertrand: Tom Brady, who is a close personal friend of Mark Davis. To the point where Mark Davis tried to sell him a piece of his NFL franchise for a third of its valuation just weeks ago, and the rest of the league had to tell Mark Davis, you’re not doing that dumb dumb. That’s not going to become a thing in this league where we start gifting pieces of franchises away. No. You want to buy a piece of the team, buy a piece of the team at market value. So the league had to shut down that transaction.
Brady and Mark Davis own the WNBA team together in Vegas. And so I wonder, was Tom Brady, close friend of Mark Davis, for whatever reason other than business, I don’t know. Weird relationship there. Was he consulted on any of the issues that have gone on in Vegas? Was Tom Brady given the opportunity to offer advice, counsel to his friend Mark Davis, about the job security of Josh McDaniels?
Scott Zolak: Well, given what an idiot Mark Davis is, I would say no. He probably blew it on this one. But I guess things weren’t perfect with Brady and Josh McDaniels when he left here.
Marc Bertrand: They were not. Zo says I guess. Don’t be coy. There were some issues there between those two guys at the end. How major they were… I don’t know. But there were definitely some hurt feelings about how some things were handled. Maybe about some reporting. Maybe about some of the things that ended up in a Wickersham story or a Wickersham book.
Scott Zolak: It’s kind of funny when Billy O’Brien was coming back and Josh was getting the gig and all that, that there were rumors that Brady that wanted to play for Billy O and not Josh. Because there was the nutjob people around here that thought he’s going to come back here and play for Billy.
Marc Bertrand: And I’m not suggesting that Tom Brady would have gone to Mark Davis and said, fire Josh McDaniels. I’m just saying, if he had a chance to save Josh McDaniels by influencing Mark Davis, would he do it? Would he do it? Would he bail Josh out and tell Mark Davis, you’re making a huge mistake here.
Scott Zolak: Not if he thinks he’s in the right. Like at this point Brady’s into making money in business. And if the right business decision is to get rid of McDaniels, Brady would say it would be to get rid of McDaniels. You’re right, Mark, do what you got to do.
Marc Bertrand: You’re right, Mark. You just got to do what you feel is right in your heart. If you think this is what’s best for the team, you should do it.
