Felger & Mazz

Paul Perillo of Patriots.com joins the show every week to discuss the latest on the team. This week, there seems to be a thought that the coaches could be a bit harder on the players, including some commentary from NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry. Paul Perillo also thinks that the players could execute a bit better as well.

Felger: The players have gotten together and decided someone has to be the driver of well-executed football and it needs to be us because they’re not getting the details they need to be successful from the coaches. They’re going to hold the coaches accountable to get those details that they need. How do you feel about that?

Paul Perillo: I mean, again, I totally understand the shortcomings with the coaches, but I do think there’s a little bit of like, excuse me, like, you know, it’s not our fault. We want to do more. We want to practice on the weekend, you know, after the Thursday night game. But, you know, they’re not coaching us hard enough. You know, we heard Mac say that “I want to be coached harder” a couple of weeks ago.

Felger: Andrew Callahan last night to us on TV. He said, what Paul just said that some players were surprised that they were given the Friday off after the Bills game or the weekend off.

Paul Perillo: Yeah. And I heard, you know, the clip of Andrew saying that I, you know, sort of poked around a little. I didn’t hear anything along those lines today, you know, from just talking about it a little bit. But I do wonder if there’s, you know, like there’s an opening there. Right? And everybody, you know, when things aren’t going great, yeah, the lifeboats come out, you know, the like, who’s scurrying off the ship and the “I want to do more but, you know, my hands are tied”. I can’t, you know, we need more detail. I mean, like they called a lot of screens the other night. Did they execute any of them well?

    Felger: Like one or two.

Paul Perillo: I know it’s easy to say, you know, “it was Screen Fest 2022” the other night, you know, I stole that from Tom Curran. I liked that line, so I stole it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t, you know, rip off a few good ones. It’s a it’s a team that blitzes a lot in Arizona. Yeah, did they go overboard? Yes. Because I don’t think they got the amount of blitzes that they thought they were going to get. But, you know, maybe Matt Patricia could have adjusted to that a little bit, but they didn’t execute any of them all that well. You know, really, the the best play was probably the little swing pass to Marcus Jones where he made three guys miss. You know, not a lot of them were blocked up really well. So again, detail oriented? Yeah, maybe they’re lacking some of the attention to detail in the coaching, but I think the players can get out there and execute a little bit better than they have.
