Felger & Mazz

A Brad Marchand penalty in overtime of Tuesday’s Boston Bruins game against the Dallas Stars turned 3-on-3 hockey into what ultimately ended as 4-on-4 hockey. On Wednesday’s Felger and Mazz, Felger voiced his frustration with the NHL’s overtime rules and propsed a change to the NHL overtime format, as well as the NBA’s!

  • Felger's NHL Overtime rule change proposal

Felger: I hate that the NHL goes to 4-on-3 when there’s a penalty in overtime.

Mazz: I happen to agree with you on this one. Go ahead.

Felger: It ruins the overtime. Here’s a fact: 3-on-3 is greater than, is more entertaining than 4-on-3.

    Jim Murray: Yeah. 100%.

    Mazz: Oh, by a lot.

Felger: 4-on-3 now becomes a halfcourt game and it mucks up, slows down the whole purpose of the thing, which is to take bodies off the ice, open up room, and go back and forth and up and down the ice. So I hate that a penalty in overtime becomes 4-on-3. I’ve come up with a solution. They should make it 3-on-2 and if you don’t like that, a penalty in overtime becomes a penalty shot. I’ll give the team the option. You can have a 3-on-2 power play, and you know what to even trick it up a little bit more it’s a minute power play, so you can go 3-on-2 for a minute or take a penalty shot. Your call.

  • Felger's NBA Overtime rule change proposal

    Felger: NBA overtime.

Jim Murray: I hate this one.

Felger: I’ll give you two proposals. Okay, here’s one: sudden death. That would be cool. After Houser hits that shot, Middleton misses at the buzzer, Tip it….next basket wins sudden death.

Mazz: Yeah, but then you got to have each team an opportunity to possess the ball.

Felger: Here’s the second option: make the overtime 48 seconds, maybe even 36. It’s one possession each side. But the team that wins the tip can, do you go for a 2-for-1? Do you try and score quick? Do you bleed it? The team that wins the tip obviously gets an advantage, but you put some sort of decision on them. Do you go for the 2-for-1? Something like 48 seconds, 50 seconds, 36? I don’t know, we can come up with the exact right time. But something beyond 24 seconds that gives them a 2-for-1 opportunity. So do they go for two possessions and shoot quick? Or do they go for the best shot and let the other team try and tie or win?
