Reiss: Jerod Mayo kept Drake Maye out of harm’s way vs. 49ers
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss explains why the New England Patriots didn’t play Drake Maye versus the San Francisco 49ers.
Why Not Play Drake Maye?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jon Wallach: The Patriots had two offensive lines to get hurt yesterday. Jacoby Brissett got sacked 6 more times. I saw a report from Ian Rapoport earlier in the day that Drake Maye’s not ready to play yet. They’re not prepared to put him on the field yet.
Brissett is just getting beaten up. There were a couple of times yesterday when he went down and I didn’t think he’d get back up. What can Jerod Mayo say to raise the spirits of the offensive side of the football? Where does the offense go from here?
Mike Reiss: Oh man. What can he say? I mean, keep plugging, right? You’ve got the Miami Dolphins coming to town next week. I guess that’s a better matchup than the 49ers. That looked like a total mismatch yesterday. I never felt like the outcome was in doubt.
I think next week is a game they can win and maybe show them some of the good plays that they’ve had. Look, this isn’t a total disaster. Look at the first drive; they can move the ball. I think they’re so limited. They have no explosive plays. I think they must play a certain style.
So, in answering your question, for them to lift their spirits, they need to stop beating themselves. That’ll give them a chance to compete and maybe have a chance to win.
Fred Toucher: They decided to not play Drake Maye yesterday. I don’t have an opinion on it, but it’s a similar situation to what was happening with the Jets. What are your thoughts?
Reiss: Jerod Mayo said after the game he didn’t consider it. To the reasons why, it might have been as simple as you’re in that situation with Nick Bosa. When Bosa pins his ears back, you see what could happen. In the end, though it was obvious that Brissett was a sitting duck.
So, my thought is that they probably wanted to keep the kid out of harm’s way.
