Johnston: Swayman has proved he can make big-time saves
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Boston Bruins radio play-by-play announcer Ryan Johnson talked about Jeremy Swayman’s contract situation.
Still No Contract for Jeremy Swayman
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Do you think it’s more important to have a stout defense and a balanced team than an elite goalie? Essentially, does a good team make a good goalie, or does a good goalie make a good team?
Ryan Johnston: I would say that there are probably examples of both. You can get by with a decent goalie and an excellent defense. If you have a bad goalie and a good defense, you can probably do OK with that. When you have a great goalie, they can hide a lot of warts.
For as much as people around here—the Felgers of the world—say, “Oh, you can have anybody in goal.” I don’t think you can. I believe that the Bruins’ success will come from being a very good team defensively. They did a lot to improve their defense this offseason.
But if you’ve got a guy back there who can erase the mistakes that your defense makes, it’s such a huge advantage. You have to look at some of the teams that failed year after year in the playoffs. Those teams have an OK goalie, but they just can’t come up with the big save when needed.
And what Swayman showed last year in the playoffs is that he’s capable of making those big saves. When he’s carrying the load, he can make the big saves in big situations.
Hardy: That’s where I part company with you a little bit, Ryan. I don’t know that Swayman is great and he wants great goaltender money.
Johnson: Yeah, I mean, that could be where the negotiations are right now. How long does the team want to commit to him?
I don’t know any of this stuff personally. There’s been a school of thought that the Bruins could go with a shorter-term deal to get something done to get him into camp. Maybe they just want to get him ready to play and deal with the longer-term implications later. If you can play him for 55-60 regular season games this year, you can see what he’s worth.
I’m guessing that there are two schools of thought going on between the team and the player. And I’m just not sure how the two sides will get that worked out.
