Joe Mazzulla details how his life has changed after winning the NBA Finals
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla went into detail about how his life has changed after winning the NBA Finals.
The goal is for nothing to change.
Marc Bertrand:
It’s only been a few days, Joe, but how is your life going to change now that you’ve won and you’ve got an NBA title to your name?
Joe Mazzulla:
I mean, I think the goal is for it to try not to, right? I think the thing that keeps coming back to me is just like perspective like just because you won a championship doesn’t mean that you’re, you know better than other people. I think that’s important and you have an understanding that the difference between winning one and not can literally come down to 1 play, 5 plays, 10 plays, an injury and or non-injury. You gotta create your own opportunities, but you know things have to go your way as well. I think it’s more importantly just like focus on the things that we can replicate from this. You know the togetherness, the toughness, the mindset, the gratitude. So, like really just kind of focusing on those things and you know that shouldn’t change much.
Marc Bertrand:
But inevitably, your profile is now raised. You are instantly more recognizable, you will not have any doubters about your ability to coach in the NBA and win at a high level, as you’ve now done. Those things have definitely changed, even if you don’t change.
Joe Mazzulla:
I mean, I think they’ve changed for the temporary, but that’s not something you want to rely on as you’re growing and getting better as a coach and an organization for the long term. So this was, you know, I think we’re on a journey and I think it’s been the coolest part since I’ve gotten here with the Celtics in four years. We’ve had so many experiences together, so many wins, so many losses and it’s a journey. So it’s not like, hey, this was this year and then next year it’s like a completely different season and it’s all a part of where we’re at. We’ve had a great nucleus of people together for a long time. So there’s going to be more ups and downs around it and I think you just continue to keep the perspective and I think going after greatness is kind of the thing that’s like I’m ready for. That doesn’t mean anything. That just means going after greatness. You know, building the relationships, practicing, executing, doing all those things that lead to winning, like how long can you just kind of do those things over and over again and see where it takes you.
