Following the trade, DeShiels was optioned to the Triple-AAA Worcester Red Sox. The WooSox recently lost outfielder Marcus Wilson, who was DFA'ed to open up a 40-man roster spot for the team's trade deadline acquisitions.
Although the trade deadline passed last week, players who are not on their team's 40-man roster can still be moved for another month. That was the case with DeShields, who has not played in the big leagues yet this year.
