(Photo Credit: Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports)The second game of the season between the Red Sox and Yankees descended into mayhem in the seventh inning. Yanks DH Tyler Austin charged the mound as he reacted angrily to taking a fastball to his back from Boston's Joe Kelly.
Kelly's pitch presumably came in retaliation for a hard slide by Austin earlier in the game. Austin slammed his bat before throwing his helmet down and running for Kelly, who gestured to Austin to come at him. Both threw punches at each other as the benches and bullpens cleared. Kelly and Austin were ejected from the game, along with Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin.
You can watch the incident below:
Tempers originally flared in the third inning, when Austin slid aggressively into Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt on a double-play attempt. Holt took exception to Austin's slide, which appeared to be with the bottom of his cleats crashing directly into Holt's foot area.
Austin also appeared to throw an errant punch that landed on Red Sox third base coach Carlos Febles:
The Yankees led 10-6 after eight innings.
