Massachusetts’ Road Trip Options Great For Spring
A springtime road trip just hits differently. When you look at the reasons to hop in the car and head out on the highway, late March through Memorial Day weekend can be one of the best times of year to embark on such a journey.
If you have not booked an elaborate spring break vacation, all is not lost. The question, “What will we do with the kids home all week,” can be answered by a spontaneous road trip adventure. Luckily, living in Massachusetts, there are plenty of fun and memorable drive options available to you.
Boston To Cape Cod
This seems obvious, but driving over the Sagamore Bridge and down Route 76 into the Cape outside of the summer can be incredibly relaxing. Furthermore, the traffic is nowhere near as bad. Once you are over the bridge, just keep driving all the way down to the rotary in Orleans. Expect this to take about an hour.
Once you get to Orleans, it’s an opportune time to hit Nauset Surf Shop before the summer crowds snag all their new shirt and hat designs. In mid-May, Arnold’s (3850 Route 6) will be open for the year. You can hit this Lobster and Clam Bar, play a little mini golf, and then end up at Cahoon Hollow Beach in Wellfleet about 20 minutes later.
The Beachcomber may not be open, but getting the chance to walk down the sand dunes and take in a fresh breath of the Atlantic Ocean in the spring is beyond refreshing. Plus, once again, there are not many crowds to avoid. The dunes and waters are yours alone to enjoy.
Other Notable Road Trip Routes
Certainly, you can head north to quaint New Hampshire or Vermont mountain spots out of Massachusetts, but for the sake of keeping it local in the Bay State, here are a few other great spring drives.
- Head down route 3a along the south shore. Hit Duxbury Beach and explore various marshlands.
- Drive out west to Lenox. The Berkshires provide colorful photos where the mountains feel like they are at your fingertips.
- Don’t sleep on the Basketball Hall of Fame. The upgrades to this Springfield sports haven are worth experiencing. It’s visible right off Route 91. Try your skills at a few three-point shots, grab a burger, and even stay overnight at one of the reasonably priced hotels at your fingertips on this road trip.
Regardless of which route you choose, the expectations here are that you can roll down the windows, blast some of your favorite driving music, and take in the local scenery.
