The Patriots didn’t end up making a trade prior to Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, but they did making another kind of roster move on Tuesday. As a result, the team now has an open spot on the 53-man roster.
That spot was opened up by the team placing wide receiver Kendrick Bourne on injured reserve. Bourne tore his ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.

What will the Patriots do with that open roster spot? A signing from the practice squad would make sense. Offensive tackle Conor McDermott and defensive tackles Jeremiah Pharms and Trysten Hill are logical candidates after recent practice squad elevations. The team could also put rookie quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham back on the active roster after releasing him and signing him back to the practice squad last week.
The Patriots also hosted two free agents for workouts on Sunday in outside linebacker Tashawn Bower and safety A.J. Thomas, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. Both could be candidates to fill an open practice squad spot, if the Patriots end up signing a practice squad player to the active roster.
Bower stands out as a fit, given he’s been with the Patriots before. He was signed to their practice squad in November 2019, then spent time on both the active roster and practice squad in 2020, appearing in seven games with three starts. In 2021 he made the practice squad again and was elevated for two games, before being signed off the practice squad by the Minnesota Vikings that November. Bower spent this year’s training camp with the New York Giants.

This Halloween weekend was no exception.
The Patriots started strong on Sunday, but just couldn’t keep in going. Things slowly unraveled after a competitive first quarter, resulting in a 31-17 loss that dropped the Patriots to 2-6 on the season.

With the NFL Trade Deadline coming up this week, there will be plenty of discussion about the long-term outlook of the team in the coming days. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what went right and what went wrong Sunday in Miami…
