Wednesday marked the date for pitchers and catchers to report to Fort Myers for Red Sox Spring Training. However, one member of that group won't be present to start workouts.
Catcher Kevin Plawecki was placed on the COVID-19 related injury list on Wednesday. The list is for players who have tested positive for COVID-19, but also those who have been exposed and/or are experiencing symptoms. It's not known whether or not Plawecki tested positive.
While on the COVID-19 IL, Plawecki will not count against the Red Sox 40 man roster. There's no minimum or maximum amount of time he can remain on the list.
In his first season with the Red Sox in 2020, Plawecki hit .342 in 17 games at the team's backup catcher. That performance was enough to earn him another one-year contract heading into 2021, when he was against expected to back up Christian Vazquez. If Plawecki isn't ready to go for opening day that job will likely go to Chris Herrmann, who was signed to a minor-league deal last week.
