Reiss on Patriots: Bad coaching decisions, no attention to detail
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss reacted to the New England Patriots’ questionable coaching decisions against the Los Angeles Rams.
Reiss: Patriots BAD Coaching Decisions
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Some people have been critical of Jerod Mayo’s decision-making. He was asked about it after the game if the Patriots weren’t playing to win. For example, when they were down two scores on a 4th-and-2, they kicked a field goal.
However, most of us agree that that doesn’t seem like an outrageous move to kick a field goal there.
Mike Reiss: I will tell you that this game was hard for me to wrap my head around. I went through most of the game footage last night and this morning. I thought there were four big game-management decisions that Jerod Mayo had to make. That 4th-and-2 decision was one of the big ones.
My view of it is that you can justify either decision. I don’t think he’d be egregiously wrong or right for whatever decision he would end up making.
What stood out to me is that each decision made wasn’t supported based on what happened afterward. This brings me back to the bigger picture: the Patriots lost to a more talented team. The other team had more talented players, but a lack of attention to detail was ultimately the most disappointing aspect of the Patriots’ performance. That was more disappointing than any coaching decisions.
Jon Wallach: So is that how you explained the defensive performance yesterday? For some reason, Christian Gonzalez wasn’t covering Puka Nacua or Cooper Kupp for long periods. Plus, they couldn’t seem to stop Matthew Stafford for long periods either. This is interesting because the defense is coming off a nine-sack performance the week before.
Reiss: Yeah, so that’s the first thing I wanted to look at when going through the game film. Defensively, would it have made a difference if they put Gonzalez on those two guys? My instinct was just based on watching the game live and going back through a few select plays, it would not have made a difference.
What would have made a difference, in my opinion, is that you shouldn’t call an all-out blitz at the start of the third quarter when you have seven players rushing. You’re putting all your corners on an island. And you gave up a 69-yard touchdown.
If we want to talk about questionable coaching decisions, that one is number one on my list. You could say that was a very regrettable coaching decision in the game.
