Brissett is perfect player to teach Drake Maye
On Friday’s Felger & Mazz program, Matt McCarthy and Jim Murray react to a clip of Jacoby Brissett saying that he’s the perfect mentor for Drake Maye.
Brissett Perfect Mentor for Maye
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Matt McCarthy: You can say I’m taking the cheese. I like that. I like that quote from Jacoby Brissett, saying that he’s the perfect guy to mentor Drake Maye. But he’s here to start. He’s here to win games because he’s been better than Drake Maye.
Drake Maye is the big story today coming out of camp. But as Alex Barth told us at the beginning of the program, Jacoby Brissett in some ways is the story of camp. The offense hasn’t been great, but Brissett has looked the part. He’s looked what you want him to look like, knowing that there are limitations there.
But Brissett did have some interesting comments when he sat down with Rappaport today. He says that he’s the perfect player to bring along Drake Maye. Agree or disagree?
Jim Murray: That part I do agree with. Again, I wasn’t excited when he ended up being this bridge guy that they brought in this offseason. I would have liked a little bit more spice. Maybe a guy like Gardner Minshew. I think he’s a couple of ticks better regarding his intangibles and physical attributes on the field. Even with the grit you get with Minshew, I do believe that he gets some guys behind him despite the overall lack of talent.
I would’ve also taken Justin Fields, there’s a ton of upside there. I would’ve just preferred a younger guy at the quarterback position.
But there are some things I do like with Brissett. He is a good locker room dude, a great leader, and knows his role. Yeah, he’ll start, but he knows it’s all a matter of time before this becomes Drake Maye’s team.
He was even giving love to the offensive line today. The offensive line is terrible from all the reports we’ve been hearing. We know that. That, as of right now, is one of the bigger concerns going into the season.
But that also shows me he’s willing to lie for his teammates to say. To say, like, “I got your backs.”
The offensive line hasn’t been great but maybe they’ve been getting better every day.
McCarthy: That poor offensive line is going to get him hurt.
Murray: But he’s a good leader because he’s willing to lie to the media to make his teammates look better. That’s what I saw out of that today. So, I think that’s a good thing. That’s his best attribute. It’s why he’s here.
