Patriots place two rookies on reserve lists ahead of training camp
Patriots rookies Terrell Jennings and Jontrey Hunter were placed on reserve lists ahead of the start of training camp on Wednesday.
The New England Patriots are just a few days away from the start of training camp, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday. However, two Patriots rookies may not be on the field with the team for the start of the summer.
On Friday, the team placed two UDFAs on reserve lists, after they reported to the facility. The report day for rookies was Friday, with veterans scheduled to report on Tuesday.
According to multiple reports, running back Terrell Jennings is being placed on the physically able to perform (PUP) list. Meanwhile, linebacker Jontrey Hunter was added to the non-football injury (NFI) list.
No reasons were immediately given for either placement. Both players took part in Patriots rookie minicamp and spring practices. Being put on those lists can happen for a number of reasons, including failing a conditioning test and in the case of rookies, rehabbing from a college injury.
Jennings, who played his college ball at Florida A&M, was expected to compete for the third running back spot behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. Other players in the mix for that job are veterans Kevin Harris and JaMycal Hasty, and UDFA Deshaun Fenwick.
Hunter was one of the Patriots’ top-ranked UDFAs, and the lone player from the group to take part in the NFL Combine. The Georgia State linebacker was expected to compete for a depth linebacker role and a spot on special teams.
The good news for Jennings and Hunter is they can be activated and resume practicing at any time (they can also be activated prior to Wednesday if they meet the criteria to do so). If they’re not activated by final roster cuts at the end of August, they’d be out for at least the first four weeks of the season.
