Bruins can’t hold off Kings, lose 5-4 in overtime
The Boston Bruins could not quite get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon.
Blowing leads of 3-1 and 4-3, the Bruins ultimately fell 5-4 in overtime to the Los Angeles Kings in a matinée at TD Garden. Boston is now 1-3-2 since returning from the break. Kings rookie defenseman Brandt Clarke scored his first career NHL goal to give his team the win in the extra period, finishing a breakaway after serving a penalty.

L.A. out-shot Boston 16-8 in the first period, but it was the home team that hit the first intermission on top. The Bruins built a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, as Ullmark stopped 15 Kings shots.
James van Riemsdyk scored his first of the game to give the B’s a 1-0 lead, after he dug a loose puck out from under Kings goaltender David Rittich and flipped it into the open net.

The Bruins momentarily thought they had a 2-0 lead off the stick of David Pastrnak, but the Kings successfully challenged for goaltender interference to wipe the goal off the board. Just a few minutes later, the Kings’ Matt Roy answered with a trickler off Ullmark to tie the game 1-1, then a fight ensued between Frederic and Andreas Englund.

“JVR” made it two goals and a 2-1 lead less than four minutes after that, this time with a nifty no-look backhand move on a power play.

The Bruins then got their third goal from an unlikely source. Recent call-up Anthony Richard buried his first as a Bruin after linemate Jesper Boqvist made a great play to snag the puck in a board battle and set him up in front.

L.A. began their comeback in the second period. First they cut the lead to 3-2 after defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov’s point shot deflected off the Bruins’ Kevin Shattenkirk and in. Alex Laferriere later tied it 3-3 in the third period after his attempt went off Ullmark’s skate and slid in.
But just 1:20 after that, Frederic finished a rebound off a Bruins odd-man rush for his 16th goal. The goal completed a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” for Frederic, who scored a goal, assist, and fighting major in the game.

Kings captain Anže Kopitar tied the game after tipping a point shot from defenseman Drew Doughty. His tying goal came in a 6-on-4 power play/empty net situation with just 1:35 left, setting the stage for overtime.
