Report: J.C. Jackson set to sign ‘big money deal’ in free agency
J.C. Jackson’s departure in free agency seemed inevitable over the last few weeks, but it is now official. According to multiple reports, Jackson is heading to the Los Angeles Chargers. Jackson’s decision was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport as “a big money deal.”
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jackson’s new deal is a five-year contract worth $82.5 million. $40 million of that is guaranteed, the sixth-most guaranteed money for a cornerback in the NFL. It’s a front-loaded contract, with Jackson making up to $40 million over the first two years, per Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.
Jackson joined the Patriots as a UDFA in 2017. His 25 interceptions over the last four years are the most in the NFL in that span. Last season, the 26-year-old had eight picks with an NFL-best 23 pass breakups and one of the lowest opposing passer ratings in the league.
With Jackson now heading west, the Patriots have three true boundary corners currently under contract in Jalen Mills, Joejuan Williams, and Justin Bethel. Jonathan Jones and Myles Bryant remain as slot options, with Shaun Wade being able to play both spots.
The Patriots have now lost two players in free agency today, with Jackson following starting guard Ted Karras. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy was also released shortly before free agency began. Devin McCourty, Brian Hoyer, James Ferentz and Matthew Slater have all re-signed in New England.
