The Patriots placed starting cornerback and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore on IR Wednesday. Gilmore suffered a partially torn quad in Sunday's loss to Miami, an injury which will require surgery to repair.

Gilmore played 11 games for the Patriots this season, recording an interception and three pass breakups. He was one of three Patriots players named to the Pro Bowl on Monday.

With Gilmore now officially out for the rest of the season, Jason McCourty will likely see a larger role as an outside cornerback opposite J.C. Jackson. UDFA rookie Myles Bryant could factor into replacing Gilmore as well.

Placing Gilmore wasn't the only roster move the Patriots made on Wednesday. The team also signed defensive tackle Isaiah Mack to the practice squad. Mack was claimed by New England off waivers in early November, and played two games with the team before being released last week.
