Rex Burkhead left Sunday's loss to the Texans with what looked to be a pretty serious knee injury. Now, the team is fearing that injury could cost him his season.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Patriots fear Burkhead has torn the ACL in his right knee. Burkhead will have an MRI to confirm the diagnosis.
Burkhead has been one of the Patriots' most consistent offensive players this season, in both the running game and passing game. He's averaged 4.2 yards per carry on the ground, and 8.1 yards per catch through the air. The 30-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Assuming they won't have Burkhead at least for the foreseeable future, the Patriots backfield will consist of Damien Harris, Sony Michel (who came off IR on Saturday), and UDFA J.J. Taylor.
