Red Sox rotation revealed for first series of 2025 against Rangers
The Boston Red Sox will begin the 2025 season with a three-game series against the Texas Rangers. The starting pitcher rotation for their inaugural series was released on Saturday. The team’s de facto ace Garrett Crochet will get Mar. 27’s Opening Day start, followed by Tanner Houck, and then Walker Buehler.
So, the first three games are filled by the arms that most could have guessed, but the question is: Who fills in for Mar. 31’s game against the Baltimore Orioles and the two games following? With half of the Red Sox’ six-man rotation starting the year on the injury list, the team may have limited options following the three aforementioned names.
In all likelihood, the Sox will utilize starters they originally expected to play in the minors, while they await the returns of Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford. Fortunately, the reports regarding the three is they are all primarily short-term injuries, but losing half the rotation before the season even starts is less than ideal, to say the least.
“We’re going to be tested right away,” said Alex Cora about the team’s pitching situation, via Julian McWilliams. The team will certainly “be tested” for a few weeks. They will have to hope that the offense gets going early in the year. They also must hope that whomever their replacements are will be serviceable enough to keep the team afloat.
However, fortunately for the Red Sox, following the Orioles that will test them their schedule sees a slight reprieve, as far as competition level goes. They will have series against the Cardinals, Blue Jays, and White Sox that will occupy the team from Apr. 4 to Apr. 13. The stretch playing lesser competition should hopefully buy some time for their injured pitchers to heal without the team falling too far back in their absence.
