The NHL's Winter Classic is returning to New England! On Friday evening, the league announced the 2023 event will feature the Boston Bruins and take place at Fenway Park, in what will be the 15th anniversary of the event which began in 2008.

According to the release from the league, "Boston's opponent, broadcast information and confirmed date for the 2023 NHL Winter Classic® will be announced at a later date." While the game is typically held on New Year's Day, that hasn't been the case when it falls on a Sunday, which is the case in 2023. In the two previous instances, the game has been held the following day. Fans who want more information on tickets and merchandise are being told to visit BostonBruins.com/WinterClassic.

This will be the fifth outdoor game for the Bruins, and their third as a host. Fenway played host to the third ever Winter Classic back in 2010, when the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime on a goal from Marco Sturm. The B's also hosted the Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium in 2016, losing 5-1. In 2019, the Bruins were the road team taking on the Chicago Blackhawks at Notre Dame Stadium, and picked up a 4-2 win.

Their most recent outdoor game came this past February as part of the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe series. The Bruins beat the Flyers 7-3 in that one.

As part of the announcement, the league also announced the Carolina Hurricanes will host an outdoor game as part of the NHL's Stadium Series, and that the Florida Panthers will host the 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend.
