On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, we reacted to the breaking news of David Pastrňák agreeing to an eight-year contract extension through the 2030-31 season with an annual NHL cap hit of $11.25 million.

• Don Sweeney deserves all the credit

  Marc Bertrand: What a job by Donnie Sweeney. That guy’s going to get a contract for life now. We’re never going to be able to talk about firing Donny Sweeney again. It’s over. I mean, it’s been over for months, but now it’s… forget it. The one thing that I said could undo all of his great moves in his heater that he’s been on is losing Pastrnak and now it looks like we await the official word but Ty Anderson reporting it’s a done deal. 8 (years) at $11.25 MM.

  Scott Zolak: He could go away on vacation now. He’s done, his job is not no longer needed this year.

  Marc Bertrand: What more can he do?

  T-Bone: Is he the best GM in town?

  Marc Bertrand: Right now yah.

  Scott Zolak: How can you say no? Right now yes.

  Marc Bertrand: I mean, Brad Stevens has been really good since taking over, but I mean, he hasn’t had the need or the ability to make major moves because so much of the roster was set when he took over. I mean, his core was very much in place. Tatum, Brown, Williams.

  T-Bone: The team has made it official, by the way.

  Marc Bertrand: What’s the team say?

  T-Bone: 8 years, 11.5 million a year.

  Marc Bertrand: Wow. Pasta signed. Don Sweeney can go on vacation. Best GM in town. Comeback kid, Don Sweeney. He’s going to win GM of the Year.
