The Boston Red Sox kick off their 2023 season in under a week. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, Felger asked Mazz for his expectations for the Red Sox season. Here’s what Mazz had to say about the team.

What are Mazz's expectations for the Red Sox?
Mazz: I mean, at best, they’re what? Little over .500?
Felger: So you agree with the tiers? They should be 20-23?
Mazz: I think they’re in the middle of the pack at best. So that scenario to me just suggested that I’m probably thinking too much of them purely because I don’t want them to suck and I don’t want the season to go down the toilet. So I’m trying to acknowledge my own bias in it because I don’t want them to blow. I like baseball still. I want to watch it. I want them to be a competitive team. So I hope that’s the case. It’s probably skewing my judgment. But I heard them talking about the starting lineup today on the morning show, Roachie was was on. They were going position by position…Casas? I don’t know what he is. Arroyo? No idea. Shortstop? Hernandez? Trick or treat. No idea. Devers I know. Yoshida looks like a pretty decent player. Center Fielder? No idea. Verdugo? Mediocre at best. Their catching blows. Their pitchers have injury history. I mean, they could suck. No, no, they could. I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. There’s a chance they will really suck.
Jim Murray: Did you see Buster Olyney’s top 100 players list he put out?
Mazz: One Red Sox.
Jim Murray: One Red Sox. Rafael Devers.
Mazz: And he was in the mid thirties.
Jim Murray: Oh, I thought he was 20. He was that low?
Mazz: Or you know what, put it this way, I know he wasn’t in the top 15.
Jim Murray: Yeah, you’re right.
Mazz: So again, what does that tell you? What the manager is supposed to start pulling rabbits out of his ass?
Felger: Or the GM is finding you diamonds in the rough?
Mazz: So look, again, I hope I’m wrong. I hope everything goes right for them. I hope they give us a baseball season. My guess is that their pitching will be good enough for them to hang around. But even if they hang around, what does that do for you?
Felger: Well, it gives us a baseball season.
Mazz: But I think the expectation for them should be higher than that.
