New England Patriots

Since the Patriots’ Shrine Bowl coaching staff was revealed on Wednesday morning, multiple updates have clarified coaches’ positions. Four key members of the 2022 staff – Matt Patricia, Joe Judge, Steve Belichick, and Nick Caley were initially not included. Since that release though, we’ve learned that at least two of those coaches did in fact make the trip.

That began Wednesday afternoon, when Tom E. Curran from NBC Sports Boston reported that Belichick was in fact taking part in the Shrine Bowl. He added that Belichick being left off was an “oversight” by the Shrine Bowl graphics team.

  • The updates continued on Thursday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that Judge will he with the team in Las Vegas. Rapoport also clarified that Judge would join Steve Belichick in the ‘supervisory role’ also held by Bill Belichick, Jerod Mayo, and Bill O’Brien.

That leaves Patricia and Caley as the only two unaccounted for coaches from last year’s staff. It’s worth noting that Caley had interviewed for the Jets’ offensive coordinator job last week. Although he didn’t end up getting the job (the Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett on Thursday), the uncertainty about his future, compounded by the fact that his his contract with the Patriots is reportedly up, may have seen him left off the coaching roster.

There is one other coach from the 2022 staff not expected to make the trip to the Shrine Bowl, defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington. It was previously reported that Covington will be a defensive coordinator at the Senior Bowl in Mobile. The Senior Bowl’s week of practice overlaps with the Shrine Bowl, so he wasn’t expected to be in attendance in Vegas.
