  • Rookie Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton has been one of the most-talked about players during training camp this year. However, his hype train may need to hit the break.

Late in the Patriots’ fourth quarter preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Friday night, the team announced Thornton would be out for the rest of the game with a shoulder injury.

  • This announcement came well after Thornton would have come out of the game regardless, with the team putting the reserves in the game midway through the second quarter. Thornton didn’t appear to be on the sideline when the announcement was made in the fourth quarter.

Prior to the game, NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry reported on the Patriots Pregame Show that the Patriots had been getting calls from teams inquiring about trading for one of their wide receivers due to the depth at the position on the roster. That depth now looks slightly different, with Thornton dealing with an injury and Kendrick Bourne missing the game for unknown reasons.

The Patriots did have some good news at the wide receiver position too though. Lil’Jordan Humphrey put together an impressive performance, including a 25-yard reception. Humphrey, a fourth-year pro who spent the last three seasons with the Saints and was signed by the Patriots just before camp, continues to make a push towards one of the Patriots’ final roster spots.
