Boston Bruins

The Bruins capped an absolutely wild day for the organization in pretty much the only way they know how: a victory.

Oh, and it was yet another record-setting one, too, as the Bruins became the fastest team in NHL history to hit 100 points, as tonight’s victory puts them at 101 points for the season and through just 61 games played.

It also comes with a bit of a jab at the organization’s century-long rival, too, as the previous record was held by the 1976-77 and 1977-78 Canadiens, both of whom accomplished the feat in 62 games.

  • Scoreless through 20 minutes of action, it was the hot stick of deadline addition Dmitry Orlov who opened things up for the Black and Gold, and with an absolute rocket of a power-play shot that cleanly beat the Sabres’ Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at the 12:01 mark of the period.

The Bruins wasted no time building off that, either, as a net-front crash and putaway from the freshly-recalled Jakub Lauko doubled the Boston edge just 1:26 later.

Orlov, of course, picked up a helper on that strike, which pushed his Boston run to three goals and seven points through just three and a half games with the B’s.

  • And then came a straight-up monsoon of goals — empty-net tallies and otherworldly skill goals alike — from the Bruins in what finished as one of the biggest late-game beatdowns you’ll see this season.

Pavel Zacha capped a tremendous sequence from David Pastrnak and David Krejci at the 8:35 mark of the third frame for his 16th goal of the season, while Pastrnak added a $90 million empty-net goal with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

  • B’s captain Patrice Bergeron upped it with a 200-foot empty-net goal, and then came a Connor Clifton shorthanded goal 24 seconds later, and it was Lauko who kicked the extra point through the uprights with Boston’s seventh goal of the evening, scored with 52 seconds left in the game.

Safe to say it was all more than enough for the Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman, but Swayman shined all the same, with a strong 26-of-27 effort in the Boston net.

On the backend, Orlov finished this game with three points thanks to an assist on the Bergeron empty-net goal, which bumped him up to eight points through four games with the Bruins. It also made Orlov the first Bruins defenseman to record back-to-back three-point games since Zdeno Chara in Mar. 2011.

The Bruins also dealt with yet another in-game injury situation, as Brad Marchand departed this game with a lower-body injury after two periods of play. It’s unclear where and when the injury occurred, but the injury is not expected to be anything significant, a source told 98.5 The Sports Hub.
