Trevor Story’s return to the Boston Red Sox is getting closer. The All-Star shortstop hasn’t played yet this season due to offseason surgery on his throwing elbow, but appears to be making progress on his return.

Last week, manager Alex Cora updated reporters on Story’s status. On Monday, Story himself took a turn in front of the media.

  • According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Story said his goal is to “play shortstop sometime in August.” Cora has previously stated the team plans to make Story the full-time shortstop once he’s physically ready to handle those responsibilities.

While August could see his return to shortstop, Story also said it’s possible he could return in July as a designated hitter. That’s a possibility Cora floated last week as well.

In the meantime, the Red Sox will likely continue with their patchwork solutions at shortstop they’ve used through the first three and a half months of the season. Kiké Hernandez has played the most innings at shortstop for the team this year, and leads all of baseball with 14 errors in 51 games at the position. Pablo Reyes and Christian Arroyo have filled in as well. Yu Chang saw time at shortstop at the start of the year, but has been sidelined since late April with a hand injury. Offseason trade acquisition Adalberto Mondesi also hasn’t been available as he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered last year.
