Toucher & Rich

Weekdays 6am-10am

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton spoke with the media Tuesday during a Combine press conference. Payton hired Vance Joseph to be his defensive coordinator for the Broncos. However, Payton hinted that Matt Patricia, former senior football advisor for the New England Patriots, could have a role waiting for him in Denver.

On Wednesday’s Toucher and Rich program—Evan Lazar, Patriots staff writer, gave his opinion on the situation regarding Patricia.

Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.

  • What is your read on the Matt Patricia situation?

Evan Lazar: It’s interesting. I was looking at Sean Payton and wondering whether or not he was being sincere about Matt Patricia. Or was he hyping up Matt Patricia as a solid for his buddy Bill Belichick? Payton mentioned Patricia calling plays on defense for five Super Bowls. I don’t think he’s got his facts 100 percent right on that.

Fred: You’re saying Patricia wasn’t calling the plays in 2002?

Evan Lazar: Right. We can credit Matt Patricia for calling the defense in two Super Bowls. That’s a pretty big difference between two and five.

  • Evan Lazar: There is a chance, though, that he winds up on the defensive side of the Denver Broncos coaching staff. Peyton was asked in a follow-up whether he was referring to a defensive job for Matt Patricia. He almost acted like he didn’t even know what happened last year. Of course, he would interview Patricia for a defensive coordinator position.

It sounds to me like Vance Joseph will have much to say about hiring on the defensive side of the ball. If Joseph signed off on a defensive advisory role for Matt Patricia, then I think there might be a marriage in Denver for Patricia.

  • Has Patricia now been demoted from three jobs in a row?

Evan Lazar: Essentially. Matt Patricia started as an assistant offensive line coach. He was on the offensive side of the ball 15-20 years ago. Then he pivoted to linebackers, where he was for much of his Patriots tenure before taking on the defensive coordinator title.

Maybe Patricia could get a position in Denver similar to Brian Flores’ in Pittsburgh last season. He could be a senior defensive assistant or linebackers coach and go back to his coaching roots. That would be an interesting role for him.

Patricia has to sell it to the Denver fan base, though. They’re all on board with Sean Payton. Even Vance Joseph himself had question marks going into his tenure in Denver.
