Bert Breer of The MMQB joined Toucher and Rich for his weekly visit Friday morning to discuss the Patriots unique coaching alignment. Breer was critical of the decision to go without an experienced offensive coordinator in the offseason.
Breer: “The logic in the whole thing is just bananas to me that, you know, Bill O’Brien’s not here because they were afraid they might lose him after a year. Nick Caley isn’t being promoted because he didn’t sign a contract extension.”
“That to me is mind boggling that you would put yourself in this position because you feel better that Matt Patricia and Joe Judge are going to be here in 2023. Because to me, like going and getting somebody who’s done this before, especially with the spot that you’re in with a quarterback going year one a year or two. If you lose him in a year, that’s a good problem because that means the guy hit it out of the park, right? If he’s gone after a year like that, that’s actually a really good problem to have.”
“It boggles my mind that a guy who has been so good at this for so long and, you know, has brought so many good people up through his system, is taking this sort of risk. And again, we’ve all criticized Bill in the past and look like idiots for it.
“I’m not saying it cannot work. I’m just saying it’s a pretty big risk to take with a young quarterback”
