  • The Xander Bogaerts sweepstakes have come to a close, and unfortunately for Chaim Bloom and the rest of the Boston front office’s top priority, it did not end with a Red Sox victory.

Instead, it was the San Diego Padres who closed their Wednesday night with Bogaerts signing on the dotted line, and for an absolute monster contract, with Bogaerts set to make $280 million over the next 11 years on his deal with San Diego.

  • The move to San Diego for the 30-year-old Bogaerts comes at the end of a productive day that saw the Red Sox add closer Kenley Jansen and Japanese star Masataka Yoshida, and with some in baseball believing that a Bogaerts re-signing with the Red Sox was the next domino to fall.

That was until the Padres came in with an absolute monstrous offer, anyway.

For the Padres, it’s the third-richest contract in team history, trailing only Manny Machado’s 10-year, $300 million contract signed in 2019, and the 14-year, $340 million contract Fernando Tatis Jr. signed with the club in 2021. Add Bogaerts and his deal to that list and that’s $920 million worth of contracts (and between three players) signed the Padres in just under four years.

Bogaerts’ contract is also the second-highest total value for any player signed at Age-30 or older, trailing only Aaron Judge’s freshly-inked nine-year, $360 million contract with the Yankees. Bogaerts’ new deal is $5 million ahead of Alex Rodriguez in third place, who got a $275 million contract from the Yankees in 2007.

  • Bogaerts is coming off a 2022 campaign that included a .307 batting average, along with 15 home runs and 73 RBIs, in 150 games for the Red Sox. That .307 was the third-best single-season average of his career, and it was his third time hitting at least .300 in the last four seasons, while his .377 on-base percentage was the second-best mark of his entire career, trailing only a .384 on-base percentage in 2019.

An All-Star for the fourth time in his career this past season, the 30-year-old Bogaerts also captured a Silver Slugger last month, and was a 2022 Gold Glove finalist.

Scott Boras, who reps Bogaerts, had sent out some shots towards Red Sox management and ownership in recent days, urging the team to spend big to keep Bogaerts in town.

“They have four-star ownership. They win and they pursue winning,” Boras said earlier this week. “Every one understands the Sox without X are so-so.”

  • With Bogaerts officially out of the mix, the Red Sox will almost certainly move Trevor Story to shortstop on a full-time basis, and move Kiké Hernandez out of the outfield and to second base.

Story, who just wrapped up the first year of a six-year deal worth $140 million, hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs in 94-game 2022 campaign derailed by injuries.

But no matter the Red Sox’ configuration and/or their next move, replacing Bogaerts will be no easy feat, as the Aruban-born Bogaerts was a two-time World Series winner, four-time American League All-Star, and a five-time Silver Slugger winner during his 10-season run with the Red Sox.
