There’s been no shortage of rumors about the Patriots’ interest in five-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. He’s been linked to the Patriots in varying degrees since the end of last season.

That reported interest continued into the start of the offseason, when Hopkins was still a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Since Hopkins’ release by Arizona last week, things have only picked up speculation-wise. As of Friday morning though, there’s a more concrete report linking the two.

  • The Patriots’ pursuit of free agent wide receiver Hopkins should take a major step next week. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is expected to host the 31-year-old for a visit at some point next week.

This makes the Patriots the second team to get a visit scheduled with Hopkins for the near future. Earlier in the week it was reported he’ll visit the Tennessee Titans.

That meeting with the Titans, reportedly taking place on Sunday, is still of note to the Patriots. As we mentioned earlier this week, there’s always the chance the Titans offer him so much money he signs on the spot and doesn’t take any further meetings. That will be something to watch in the coming days.

  • Cap space is also relevant here, with Hopkins seemingly prioritizing getting paid over all else. OverTheCap.com has the Patriots with $14.3 million in cap space, the 13th-most in the NFL. The Titans, by comparison, sit 25th with just under $8 million.

If the Patriots can land Hopkins, they’ll get the coverage-dictating No. 1 wide receiver they’ve been lacking for a few years now. In just nine games last season, Hopkins still caught 64 passes for 717 yards and three touchdowns.
