The NFL Combine, taking place this week in Indianapolis, is mostly an event for front office staffers of NFL teams. Along with their general managers teams send scouts and other members of their player personnel departments. Head coaches attend as well but in recent years, the presence of assistant coaches has dwindled.

This year, the Patriots are sending four members of Bill Belichick’s coaching staff. According to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, wide receivers coach Troy Brown and cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino are in Indianapolis, along with special teams coordinator Cam Achord and special teams assistant Joe Houston. Callahan notes those four are joining “several front-office members” at the event.

  • It’s not surprising to see Brown and Pellegrino take leading roles on their respective sides of the ball. That’s been the case so far this offseason, with Brown serving as head coach and Pellegrino as defensive coordinator at the Shrine Bowl. Meanwhile, Achord and Houston represent the special teams unit in a year the Patriots could be looking for both a kicker and a punter.

The Patriots likely won’t be alone in sending a limited contingent of coaches to Indy. Last year, both the Rams and Packers sent no coaches to the event.

It’s tough to say exactly what the role of the coaches will be at the Combine, but they’ll likely take part in interviewing prospects. For a running list of the players the Patriots have spoken with, check out our Patriots Pre-Draft Meeting Tracker.
