New England Patriots

On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Scott Zolak gave his grade for the Patriots 2023 draft class.

  • I'd give it a B...

Scott Zolak: I’m going to give it a B right now. I’m going to give it a B because I think what they’re trying to do is they’re trying to be faster. And the comment thing from last night and what you learn about a lot of these players is they they’re going after speed and there are certain guys they try to plan for, right? So, Sidy Sow this guard, he looks thick as does (Jake) Andrews the center. So David Andrews at some point is going to be done here. Mike Onwenu’s contract is up next year, the kid (Marte) Mapou, they had him at the Shrine Bowl, a very grown up kid fell in love with him out there. That’s how you get on the radar with Bill (Belichick). That’s a Bill pick to me right there, because who else’s contract is up in a year and they got to address it? Kyle Dugger. So some of these guys you’re going to have to move away from at some point and you did this with your guards. This is why you traded Shaq Mason away because you didn’t want to pay him $10 million again. So you got to move on from certain guys and you could see how they start to plan this. But no tight ends. You know, the kid (Johnny) Lumpkin had signed on. You know, it’s a fun name. We’ll see if he sticks. But I think the biggest thing that I took from last night and what I was impressed with, the (Kayshon) Boutte ki from LSU. So they said, we started watching him when the LSU receiver started to break and this kid got away from it a little bit. When he had an injury, he had a hell of a hell of a start to his career at LSU. He had 14 catches for 308 yards in one game, couple of touchdowns. And then of course, you know, our guy, Brian Kelly takes over down there and he sort doesn’t become part of the gameplan. But they liked what he saw early in his career and the kid’s got some speedy, he’s shifty. I think he could play the slot here. We talk about, oh, how do you get back to the sort of the (Julian) Edelman, (Danny) Amendola, you know Troy Brown, (Wes) Welker type slot guy to where you could break away in some speed here. He’s a shifty runner and the (Demario) Douglas kid also is a shifty receiver, so I think they’re trying to sort of find a next type of slot guy that can run the middle, that can understand middle spacing and it’s going allow you to kick JuJu (Smith-Schuster) outside, move him around the formation a little bit.
