New England Patriots

Patriots fans aren’t simply wondering how the team will honor Tom Brady, they want details. Ever since the greatest quarterback of all time announced his retirement last week, one of the most popular questions in New England has been whether or not he’ll sign a ceremonial one-day contract to ‘retire’ as a member of the organization.

That idea was first floated seriously by team owner Robert Kraft, who brought it up in a CNN interview last week. On Tuesday, Kraft followed up those comments in an interview with Malcolm Johnson of NBC10 Boston. According to Johnson, Kraft told him “he spoke with Tom Brady” earlier in the day about a future celebration of his career in Foxborough.

  • “We’re going to have him back here and celebrate his 20 years with the Patriots,” Kraft said, before suggesting the celebration may not just be a one-time thing. “Hopefully we’ll have occasions to do it every year – different reasons.” Kraft suggested the upcoming 25-year anniversary of the Super Bowl XXXVI championship team as an example.

Finally, the topic of the one-day contract came up with Johnson asking if it will be “a one-day contract, or a special celebration?”

    “All the above,” Kraft replied.

  • We’ll certainly find out exactly what that means in due time. At the very least though, it doesn’t sound like Brady has ruled out doing a one-day deal with the Patriots.

As for what else could be included in ‘all the above’ that Kraft mentioned? Induction into the team Hall of Fame and retiring the No. 12 both seem like likely honors. There has also been talk about a potential statue somewhere near the stadium. Renaming streets or parts of a stadium are other things teams have done in the past to honor great players.
