New England Patriots

  • With Mac Jones still battling a high ankle sprain and Brian Hoyer suffering a head injury on Sunday in Green Bay, the Patriots were down to one healthy quarterback in rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe. On Tuesday, the team added some much-needed quarterback depth signing veteran Garrett Gilbert to the practice squad. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the signing.

This will be Gilbert’s third stint with the Patriots. He was with the team on the practice squad as a UDFA out of Texas during the Super Bowl-winning 2014 season, then was released the following spring. The Patriots brought him back on the practice squad last year after final roster cuts, and he was with the team for most of the season before being signed by the then-Washington Football Team as an emergency starter in mid-December.

  • This past spring, Gilbert signed with Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency. However, the 31-year-old was let go prior to spring practices after the team traded for Jarrett Stidham.

Between stints with Washington, Dallas, Cleveland, and Carolina, Gilbert has appeared in eight NFL games with two starts. He’s completed 57.3 percent of his 75 career pass attempts for 447 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Beyond that, Gilbert was also the starting quarterback for the Orlando Apollos of the now-defunct AAF in 2019. He led the team to a league-best 7-1 record, and was the league’s leading passer among the favorites to win MVP when league operations shut down.

In the likely case Jones and Hoyer can’t dress for Sunday’s game against the Lions, Gilbert would be a logical practice squad elevation to back up Zappe. The team can elevate him up to three times during the course of this season.

To officially sign sign Gilbert the Patriots will need to open up a spot on the practice squad, which is currently full at 16 players. They could released somebody – as they did on Monday cutting Harvey Langi to make room for Jamie Collins – or they could promote a player to the active roster, which has an open spot after Yodny Cajuste was put on IR.

UPDATE: To open up a spot on the practice squad, the Patriots released wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. That move was reported by PFF’s Ari Meirov
