  • When the Red Sox signed James Paxton back in December, the idea was that the 33-year-old lefty would be able to provide the team a late-season boost when he returned from recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent last April. Now, it appears that won’t happen.

Paxton got back on the mound for the Red Sox earlier this month, making a rehab start in the Florida Complex League. He had to leave that start after 0.2 innings due to injury. It’s now confirmed that injury was a Grade 2 tear in his left lat muscle, which will hold him out for the rest of the year.

Paxton has struggled with injuries for much of his career. He’s started 20 or more games just four times in 10 big league seasons.

When the Red Sox signed Paxton, they structured his contract in a way they could see him pitch after the Tommy John surgery before making a major commitment. The deal is a one-year, $10 million contract with a two-year team option worth $26 million for the next two seasons. The Red Sox will need to decide on that option this offseason.
