Boston Red Sox

  • The Red Sox and utility player Kiké Hernandez have agreed to a one-year contract extension, the team announced on Tuesday. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the new deal will pay Hernandez $10 million in 2023.

Hernandez, who turned 31 last month, first signed with the Red Sox ahead of the 2021 season on a two-year, $14 million deal. Primarily playing as the team’s starting center fielder, Hernandez hit .250 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season in Boston, and then put together a remarkable playoff run batting .408 with five home runs in 11 games as the Sox went to the ALCS.

  • This season has been a bit tougher for Hernandez, who missed significant time with a hip injury. He’s appeared in 68 games to this point, slashing .219/.283/.354 with six home runs and 37 runs driven in.

Even with this extension, the Red Sox currently have less than $60 million in spending on the books for next season, assuming shortstop Xander Bogaerts opts out as has been previously reported. That should set the team up well with deals for Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers expected to be up for discussion.
